"The Artist" wins best film, four other Oscars

Silent was golden at the 84th annual Academy Awards with the French movie "The Artist" winning best picture.

"The Artist," filmed in black and white, is the tale of a silent movie star whose career plummets when he refuses to embrace the advent of talkies in the late 1920s.

The Artist took home five Oscars including best actor for Jean Dujardin, who beat out George Clooney and Brad Pitt for the award.

And for best actress, Meryl Streep took the Oscar for her portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron

Lady."

It was Streep's third Oscar, and her first in 30 years, although she has a record 17 nominations for the most coveted

prize in the movie industry.

Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" also took five of the world's top movie honors on a night where stories about movies felt the love of Hollywood.
