Originally written as a vocal work by Armenian composer Komitas Vardapet, this adaptation for piano is dedicated to the Armenian Holocaust in which 600,000-1,800,000 Armenians were systematically killed and deported by the Ottoman Empire during and just after the First World War. Komitas witnessed the events himself, which eventually drove him to insanity.
