Twenty thousand North Korean children attend a ceremony in Pyongyang on Wednesday (June 6) to celebrate the 66th anniversary of the Korean Children's Union.
The North's state-run television broadcast the pre-taped ceremony that showed images of boys and girls sobbing, overcome with emotion upon seeing leader Kim Jong-un.
The children all donned a red scarf, symbolising the Korean Workers' Party flag.
South Korean media say it is the largest ever celebration of the Korean Children's Union and comes as Kim tries to cement his grip on power after inheriting it from his father and former leader Kim Jong-il last December.
Kim Jong-un has reaffirmed his father's "military first" policies that have stunted economic growth, dashing hopes it will open to the outside world.
