Ivory Coast appeared to be recovering after last year's brief resurgence of civil war that followed its 2010 election.

An ambush on Friday that's killed seven U.N peacekeeping troops from Niger is being condemned by U.N chief Ban Ki-moon.

It wasn't immediately clear who was behind the attack.

SOUNDBITE: BAN KI-MOON, UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY GENERAL, SAYING (English):

"I am saddened and outraged. These brave soldiers died in the service of peace. I condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms. My heart goes out to the families at this difficult time and I express my deepest condolences to the government of Niger for this tragedy."

The new bout of civil war erupted last year when President Laurent Gbagbo refused to step down after losing the 2010 election to Alassane Ouattara.

He was defeated by French and U.N.-backed local forces who supported Outtara.

New York-based Human Rights Watch has warned of attacks from Liberia by mercenaries and Ivorians who fought for Gbago.
