"We're taught that you can achieve the same results with either form of toothbrush, depending on how thorough with whatever you're using. You can use a manual toothbrush and do just as good a job as a rotary or an electric toothbrush.
But where the electric toothbrush is really—that I see in clinical practice—excel is with people who are older, maybe who don't have the manual dexterity that they used to have. Just getting the electric toothbrush—like a Sonic Care, or there's lots of different ones out there—that just get in the area and they do a lot of the work for you. People with difficulty in their hand movements really do well with it.
I find that even with my own kids it's sometimes easier to brush them with a battery powered or electric toothbrush, than it is to kind of get in there and try to move back and forth because they just kind of fight it. Kids with braces and things like that really benefit, a lot of the time, from an electric toothbrush because they're able to get different angles and the toothbrush is constantly moving and it helps them remove more plaque that way.
So either one can be effective, it's just how well you're using it. So there are some cases where people do better with the electric one. It's just about how good of a job you're doing.
