Navy's Radio System Causing Garage Door Problems - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.
When your garage door opener isn't working, in most circumstances it's either the batteries or loss of power. But some residents in a neighborhood discovered their garage doors weren't functioning properly due to a very unusual reason.
When some of the residents of Montville, Connecticut had trouble with their garage doors, they made the company that installed them aware of the issues. Further examination revealed that the equipment was not broken and a Navy spokesperson noted that a new radio communication system recently installed at a neighboring base may be potentially disrupting garage door operations in surrounding communities. The frequencies for the Navy's radio communication system and those garage doors could be overlapping.
As 'The Day' notes - Some radio-controlled garage door openers operate legally at very low power on the same frequencies but are not licensed to do so. Because they are unlicensed devices, the owner/operator has no right to protection from interference.
This has become a significant problem for the residents since the Navy can't do anything about it and in order to alter frequencies on their garage doors, they'd have to pay hundreds of dollars to the garage door company.
