Nasser Weddady is the Outreach Director of HAMSA, an non-governmental organisation which supports people campaigning for civil liberties in the Middle East.
He talks to Al Jazeera from the US city of Boston where his organisation is based.
He lived in Syria while growing up and has personal experience of the country's far-reaching security services.
