Research Says More Affluent Give Less to Charity - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.

Do you live in a community that is generous towards charities?

The Chronicle of Philanthropy has revealed new data that shows the amount of charitable giving based on specific regions throughout the United States.

The results show that areas where there are more low-income residents, the percentage of charitable contributions are higher than in more affluent areas.

Homes with earnings of $50,000-$75,000 donate nearly 7.6 percent of their disposable income, but those with incomes $200,000 and more only give around 4 percent unless they live in zip codes where there are fewer wealthier residents. This makes some to conclude that although wealthier Americans have more discretionary income available, unless they see the poverty in their communities, they are blind to it.

Also noted was that large religious populations tend to give more. For example, Southern states gave around 5.2 percent of their disposable income compared to 4 percent in the New England states.

What do you think? How much should be given to charitable organizations?
