Violence rages in Afghanistan

Outrage in eastern Afghanistan as a NATO airstrike Saturday night kills at least eight Afghan civilians including women and children.

(SOUNDBITE) (Pashto) AFGHAN VILLAGER, SHIR ALI SAYING:

"Those killed are all women, the brutal Americans killed all women in their raid; they are not able to distinguish between sticks and guns. "

NATO officials acknowledged the civilian deaths but said a "large number" of insurgents have been killed in the strike.

In a separate incident four American soldiers were killed Sunday is a so-called insider attack bringing the total number of deaths this weekend caused by Afghans turning on their allies to six.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) INTERNATIONAL SECURITY ASSISTANCE FORCE (ISAF) SPOKESMAN, BRIGADIER GENERAL, GUNTER KATZ, SAYING:

"In the early morning hours of today four ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) service members have been killed by a members of the Afghan police, this incident is still under investigation and as soon as we have more findings we will inform you about that."

At least 51 foreign military personnel have been killed in "insider" attacks this year. The attacks have put a heavy strain on trust between the coalition and Afghanistan as they move towards handing security responsibility to Afghan forces by the end of 2014.
