Illusionist David Blaine brings to a close what must be his most electrifying performance to date.

He had spent 72 hours without food surrounded by an artificial lightning storm crackling between low-current million-volt tesla coils.

As he finished his death-defying display, he made an announcement to assembled fans in New York.

SOUNDBITE, David Blaine, illusionist, saying (English):

"This is my last endurance stunt that I'm ever going to do. But I look forward to everything. Love you."

And after three days of sleep deprivation, it was perhaps no surprise what he wanted to do next:

SOUNDBITE, David Blaine, illusionist, saying (English):

"I feel like taking a nice long nap, after my shower."

The illusionist had dressed in a 20-pound chain-mail suit during the stunt, shooting purplish arcs of lightning out of his hands all in unison with music.

However reactions to this most public of endurance tests were mixed.

SOUNDBITE, Marina Banes, spectator, saying (English):

"To me, mostly, it's a visual thing combined with the music. It's pretty amazing."

SOUNDBITE, Ali Sakis, spectator, saying (English):

"There's no real danger."

Danger or not, Blaine left the stage in an ambulance as he was taken to have his health checked.
