US cops want access to users' private web info

A federal task force report being released today reveals that police want a national web interface linking police computers with those of Internet and e-mail providers so cops can instantly access the emails and records of suspects. They want to be able to "exchange legal process requests and responses to legal process" through an encrypted, police-only "nationwide computer network. Seems like there's lots of potential for abuse - don't forget we just learned that the FBI got thousands of phone records from ordinary Americans by citing nonexistent emergencies.
