Myanmar's pro-democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi arrived in India on Tuesday (November 13) for a week long visit, and was greeted by an enthusiastic group of supporters at the airport.

Her visit to India holds a special significance as it comes after four long decades.

During her visit she will be meeting India's Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh.

She is also due to visit her alma mater, the Lady Sri Ram College for Women (LSR) in New Delhi.

Suu Kyi won the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize for championing democracy in opposition to dictatorship enforced by a military junta that held her under house arrest.

Her election to parliament in April helped transform the pariah image of Myanmar and persuade the West to begin rolling back sanctions after a year of dramatic reforms, including the release of about 700 political prisoners in amnesties between May 2011 and July.
