Former South African President Nelson Mandela is being treated for a recurring lung infection.

The 94-year-old was hospitalised four days ago for tests, and is responding to treatment, according to the government.

The anti-apartheid leader's health in recent years has made front page news.

"I think all the people of South Africa, they like Mandela, and all of them they wish him to recover very fast in his health."

Mandela, a global symbol of resistance to racism and injustice, was flown from his home in the rural Eastern Cape province and admitted to the Pretoria Military Hospital on Saturday.
