A deadly car bomb struck Qatana, a town 25 kilometres southwest of Damascus, Syrian government and government-supporting TV stations said on Thursday (December 13).

Lebanon's al-Manar television station also reported a car bomb blast in Qatana on Thursday and said 16 people were killed and more that 25 wounded, including women and children.

Qatana is part of a string of outlying suburbs and towns where President Bashar al-Assad's forces have been trying to push back rebels.

The attack follows three bombs which exploded at the Interior Ministry on Wednesday evening (December 12), killing five.
