Seven members of a family of Syrian refugees were killed here in Jordan on Wednesday when a fire broke out in their prefabricated hut in a refugee camp.

Officials said the fire was started by a gas heater, and added that at least three people were also injured in the blaze.

A relative of the victims blames their deaths on poor conditions in the camp.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) SYRIAN REFUGEE, ABU MOHAMMAD, SAYING:

"What happened today has never happened anywhere in the world, it's true this is God's will, but there is a reason, the reason is an electrical short. We have been suffering for 4 months from the officials in the camp."

More than 200,000 Syrian refugees are now living in towns and cities across Jordan.

An unusually bitter winter, bringing driving snow and rain, has magnified concerns for both refugees and displaced people within war-torn Syria.
