I'm not sure the phrase 'old soul' accurately describes Del Barber as a person, but there was a retro and classical quality about the man. The CBC pin on his denim vest, his stories of listening to Canada's national radio pride while crossing all corners of the nation in support of his music, his polite and quiet tone of voice with frequent hints of humor underneath all contributed to the certainty that we could listen to Del speak and pluck his guitar on the balcony all day long. Sadly though, he had to spoil it all by playing that afternoon at The Open Sky Music festival. What a jerk. Del has been busy doing what
he does, zig-zagging North America, and playing (by his estimation) a couple hundred shows a year in support of his fantastic new record Headwaters, released on Six Shooter Records.
The album has been in constant rotation since that day he joined us for pizza on the balcony and played 'Right Side of the Wrong.' The song represents Del well because I feel it's his unique lyrics that set him apart from his contemporaries. I'm not sure how he so-effectively weaves between reflections on his topics;one moment talking of political polarization on the radio, next singing out the words 'egggggsss and sausage,' but he does, and better yet, he never comes off as a lunatic. Intrigued? You should be. Pick up Headwaters ASAP (!!!) and you'll see what I mean.
